Discovering the Antithesis of Impostor Syndrome

Sophia Lee Jul 24, 2026 4 min read

Impostor syndrome haunts many, leaving us feeling inadequate. But what exists on the other side? As a female founder, I’ve faced various labels—some I embrace, others I reject. The one I dislike most? Impostor. Like many capable women, I’ve battled those feelings of inadequacy. I used to believe that with time and experience, I’d wake up one day feeling completely confident, wearing a shiny new label of expertise.

Surprisingly, I discovered a term for the opposite of impostor syndrome: the “Dunning-Kruger Effect.” This phenomenon occurs when someone's confidence exceeds their actual abilities. At that moment, I grew weary of labels and decided to define my own.

What’s in a Label?

As I pondered alternatives to the labels I resented, I realized that extremes don’t resonate with my true self. While I’ve overcome impostor syndrome, I don’t embody its opposite either. I asked myself: Where’s the label that captures that in-between space? The phase when we advance from feeling like a novice to recognizing our growth, without succumbing to overconfidence?

After reflecting and discussing with peers, I realized it’s time to let go of limiting labels like bossy, insecure, or misunderstood. Perhaps these tags don’t define us at all. This insight boosted my confidence, even if just a bit.

Embracing Continuous Learning

Imagine being at a networking event with fellow female entrepreneurs, discussing revenue and marketing strategies. That creeping feeling of “Am I in over my head?” doesn’t mean you’re a fraud. Rather, it’s a sign that you’re aware of your ongoing learning journey. Surrounding yourself with experienced professionals is a golden opportunity for growth, not a reason to feel inferior. Yes, it might be uncomfortable, but it’s also a chance to learn.

Feeling out of your depth doesn’t indicate fraudulence; it’s a testament to your commitment to growth. The frequent mention of impostor syndrome may have misled many into feeling undeserving, while in reality, it’s an acknowledgment of our potential to improve.

Welcoming Uncertainty

If you don’t embody the false confidence associated with the opposite of impostor syndrome, you understand how uncertainty can emerge. You know the sensation of stumbling, recovering, and making significant progress.

For female entrepreneurs, it's not about having everything figured out from the start. Starting a business is chaotic! We're constantly evolving, sometimes all within a single day. Instead of confining ourselves to neat categories devoid of uncertainty, let’s embrace the messiness and the lessons that arise from it.

As we forge ahead, let’s discard labels. Let’s celebrate our resilience and the determination to redefine our paths. In the world of entrepreneurship, it’s not about the labels we wear; it’s about the journeys we undertake. Let’s choose labels with care and embody the essence of true female founders—grit, grace, and relentless drive.
